A shipping rule saves which carrier and product to use, which sender address goes on the label, which countries it ships to and what the customer pays at checkout. You can also switch on Print labels automatically and choose a printer, so labels print by themselves when a shipment is sent.

Where to find them

Click Shipping rules in the sidebar. It is not under Settings. You see your rules in a list. Click Add shipping rule to create one, or click a rule to edit it.

What a rule contains

  • Carrier, Product and Services: which connected carrier and product to use, and which services to include.
  • Address: the sender address printed on the label.
  • Receiving countries: the destination countries the rule is for.
  • Shipping conditions: when a cart gets a price from this rule, and how much. You can use weight, order value, a value range, the number of items, or a flat rate. You cannot use SKU or order channel.
  • Hard limits (optional): click Configure on the Hard limits card to set a weight or order value range outside which the rule is skipped.
  • Automatic printing (optional): click Configure on the Automatic printing card, turn on Print labels automatically and choose a Label printer. When a shipment that uses this rule is sent, its label goes to that printer. See Auto-print labels.
Every field is explained in Shipping rule fields.

Add or edit a rule

1

Add or open a rule

Click Add shipping rule, or click an existing rule.
2

Choose the carrier and product

Give the rule a Rule name, keep Direction on Outbound, then pick the Carrier, Product, Services and sender Address.
3

Choose the countries

Add the Receiving countries, one by one or with Quick add for a whole region.
4

Set the price

Under Shipping conditions, add at least one condition, for example a Weight range with its price. Use Flat rate if every cart should pay the same.
5

Optional: switch on automatic printing

To print labels automatically, click Configure on the Automatic printing card, turn on Print labels automatically, choose the Label printer and click Done.
6

Save

Click Create rule (or Update rule). The rule is in use straight away.
Rules have no priority order. At checkout, every rule that fits the destination and the cart is offered to the customer as a shipping method. Inside one rule, when several conditions match, the lowest price wins. Use Test on the rule to see which price a sample cart gets.

When rules are used

  • At checkout in Shopify or WooCommerce, the matching rules become the shipping methods your customer chooses from.
  • On orders, the rule the customer chose (or the one you apply) fills in the carrier, product, services and sender address when the shipment is created.
  • On shipments, you can apply a rule to a Draft or Pending shipment instead of picking the carrier settings by hand. You can still change the carrier or product on the shipment afterwards.

Brands

If your organization uses brands, you can give a rule a Brand. Only that brand’s orders are matched by it, and it can only use carriers and sender addresses that the brand may use (its own, or ones shared by the whole organization). A rule without a brand works for the whole organization and matches every brand’s orders. Set Brand when you add or edit the rule. Developers can also set it through the API.
Zippendo checks the carrier and address every time you save the rule, not only when you first set the brand. If a carrier or sender address the rule uses is later limited to a different brand, the rule cannot be saved until you change its brand, carrier or address. The message tells you whether the carrier or the address is the problem.
