An automation runs by itself when its trigger happens, for example Shipment sent, and then carries out its steps. You find your automations under Automations in the sidebar. Each automation has its own run history: open it and click Runs.

What you see

  • The automation never appears to run, and Runs shows No runs yet.
  • You cannot activate the automation.
  • The automation runs, but a step does not do what you expected.

It never runs

The available triggers are Shipment created, Shipment sent, Shipment cancelled, Shipment error, Order created, Order updated and Tracking updated.

You cannot activate or save it

Problems in the automation stop it from being activated. The builder then says Fix the issues before you activate it, shows how many issues are blocking activation, and Can’t save. Fix the issues first. when you save. Click an issue to jump to the step it is about. Common issues:
  • The automation has no trigger.
  • A path does not end in an Exit step. Every path must end in one.
  • A Branch or Field match step has only one of its two branches (true and false) connected.
  • A step is not connected to the rest of the automation.

It runs, but something is wrong

Open the automation, click Runs and open the run. Failed runs show which step went wrong.
  • A step for an app such as Slack or Klaviyo fails. Check the connection under Apps & integrations. See Connect an integration.
  • Print label and Print document do not print. These steps do not print anything yet, even though the run shows Success. Use automatic printing on a shipping rule instead. See Auto-print labels and documents.
  • A run that waits on a delay step shows Failed. A run that is still waiting can show Failed until the delay is over. Check again after the delay.

Test it

Click Test run in the builder, or in the automation’s row menu, to try the automation without waiting for a real event. A test run uses no real shipment or order, so steps that need one can fail in a test run even when they work for real events.

Can’t create another automation?

Each plan allows a number of automations: 1 on Free, 5 on Standard, 20 on Growth, 50 on Pro and no limit on Enterprise. Delete one you no longer use, or upgrade. See Billing and usage. Related: Automations, Runs and debugging.
